GEORGIA – A COUNTRY OF WONDERS     Cultural tour, 16 days

TBILISIS If you have never been to Georgia but heard that it’s a country of beautiful landscapes and pretty towns, ancient monuments and culture, hospitable people and delicious cuisine, now you have a chance to travel around Georgia and discover for yourself this country of wonders.

Day 1: Departure for Tbilisi
Day 2: Tbilisi
Arrive in Tbilisi and transfer to hotel. Tbilisi sightseeing program - the Old and New Towns. The city offers a great variety of sights, most of them very ancient. All the places of interest in the Old Town are very close to each other, within a few minutes’ walk. We start our visit to Old Tbilisi from Metekhi Church, then walk up to the brick-domed Sulphur Baths. From the Baths we head up the hill to visit Narikala Fortress - one of the oldest fortifications in the city. Afterwards we continue to the Synagogue, Sioni Cathedral and Anchiskhati Church. This marks the end of the Old Town. After lunch we visit the stunning treasuries of the Georgian State and Art Museums, before taking a stroll along Rustaveli Avenue - the main street in Tbilisi.
GREMIDay 3: Tbilisi – David Gareja – Telavi
We start from Tbilisi early in the morning and drive to David Gareja cave complex located in a stark, semi-desert landscape. After seeing Lavra Monastery we walk up for about 50 minutes to Udabno Monastery to enjoy its wonderful painted caves and dramatic views across to Azerbaijan. In the evening we arrive in Telavi.
Day 4: Kakheti Region
We travel to Kakheti - the famous wine-growing region. In the morning we visit the farmer’s market. Then we head to Nekresi Monastery. For lunch we will take you to a farmer’s house to enjoy the hospitality of the local people and sample some delicious home-made food and wine. Here you can also see a three-century old wine cellar and taste wine straight from the clay jars kept under the ground. On the way back to Telavi we will visit the beautiful Tsinandali garden and the house of the 19th century Georgian duke as well as the wine factory to taste more Kakhetian wines.
Day 5: Telavi - Mtskheta – Gudauri
From Telavi we head back west to visit the ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia - Mtskheta and its historic Jvari Church and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral - both UNESCO World Heritage sites. Then we drive up the famous GeorgKVEVRI'S IN THE VILLAGEian Military Highway, en route visiting the Ananuri complex. The drive is very scenic as it heads up into the Caucasus Mountains. Overnight in Gudauri ski resort (2200m).
Day 6: Gudauri - Kazbegi – Gudauri
A stunning drive from Gudauri along the Tergi River will bring us to Kazbegi - the main town in the region. From Kazbegi a leisurely 1.5 hour walk up through beautiful valleys and woodland leads us to Gergeti Trinity Church located at 2170m. Weather permitting you may catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus - Mt Kazbegi (5047m). We then drive through the dramatic Dariali Gorge before returning to Gudauri.
Day 7: Gudauri - Gori – Bakuriani
From Gudauri ski resort we drive to another ski resort - Bakuriani (1800m). On the way we visit the town of Gori - the heart of the Kartli region - the Stalin Museum and Uplistsikhe Cave Town - one of the main points along the Great Silk Road. From Gori we continue to Meskheti region, pass through Borjomi spa town and drive up to Bakuriani for a two-night stay.
KAZBEGI VILLAGEDay 8: Bakuriani - Vardzia – Bakuriani
Today we drive through Meskheti and Javakheti regions to visit Vardzia Cave Town - one of the highlights of Georgia. On the way to Vardzia we also visit Khertvisi Fortress.
Day 9: Bakuriani - Borjomi – Kutaisi
A local tiny train from Bakuriani meanders down through the forest to bring us to Borjomi. In this spa town we visit the Summer Palace of the Russian Tsar and then travel to Imereti province (West Georgia) - an area of cool springs, green fields and beautiful gardens. We arrive in Kutaisi – the second largest city in the country and visit its historical sights – Gelati Monastery and Academy and the splendid Bagrati Cathedral ruins, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Overnight in Kutaisi.
Day 10: Kutaisi – Mestia
Get ready for the most exciting part of your trip - a journey to Svaneti, the region of the highest mountains and glaciers and tKINTSVISIhe most abiding ancient traditions.From Kutaisi we travel to Zugdidi where we change transport to continue to Mestia, the centre of Svaneti. Overnight in Mestia.
Day 11: Mestia - Ushguli
Today we travel to the highest permanent settlement in Europe - the village of Ushguli (a UNESCO world heritage site) - a place where high mountains, watchtowers and ancient traditions reign. Here we visit Lamaria Church with Mt Shkhara (5068m) in the background.
Day 12: Ushguli – Mestia
We return to Mestia. and visit the Mestia Ethnographic Museum, the Svanetian watch-towers, the so-called “family churches” and the famous Lenjeri Church painted inside and out.
Day 13: Mestia – Batumi
From the high mountains we descend to the subtropical coastline of palm trees, citrus groves and tea plantations. From Mestia we return to Zugdidi and then travel to Ajara region on the Black Sea coast. In the evening we MAN WITH THE CARTarrive in Batumi.
Day 14: Batumi
We visit the State Museum of Ajara, the Botanical gardens and Gonio Fortress. The SARPIafternoon is a chance to relax on the beach and enjoy the boulevard. In the evening we take an overnight train to Tbilisi.
Day 15: Tbilisi
We arrive in Tbilisi early in the morning and transfer to our hotel. After breakfast we visit the Open-Air Museum and after lunch there is free time to visit the souvenir market, flea market and do some shopping. In the evening we arrange a farewell dinner with traditional Georgian cuisine and wine followed by a folk show.
Day 16: Departure
Transfer to the airport.
