SKI MOUNTAINEERING Ski Mountaineering in the Great Caucasus
In the morning we meet a mountain team and travel along the Georgian Military Highway. En route we visit the ancient capital Mtskheta and Ananuri complex. We reach the town of Kazbegi and overnight there.
We start our ascend from the village of Gergeti to the Meteorological station. We reach Gergeti Glacier and enjoy views of Gergeti Trinity Church and snow-capped peaks. Arrive at the meteorological station in the afternoon. Ski around the station. Overnight at the station.
This is the day to get to the summit. First we will walk along the southern slopes of the mount Kazbegi. From the plateau we will continue walking along snowy and icy covered cliffs and reach one of the glaciers ( 4900 m ). From this place the way goes to the main glacier along the rocks, snow and ice ( easily climbing up approx. 40 -45 ).In case of good weather Kazbegi glacier gives us the superb view of the main range of the Caucasus mountains and also of the highest peak of it - Mt. Elbrus (5624 m). Walking time – 7-8 hours. We will need the consentration while climbing down. Overnight as on the previous day.
In case of good weather will we peacefully climb down to Kazbegi and then transfer to Tbilisi. Walking time – 3-4 hours.
Transfer to Tbilisi. Overnight in Tbilisi.
